At Optik Mizen we’re not particularly keen on set-distance occupational lenses. Yes, they’re easy to dispense; however, they are less precise than a full-range progressive lens. This is because your patient’s distance prescription and amount of ‘reading addition’ are used to calculate a progression that will provide (approximately) the desired visual range (e.g. 1.2m, 2m or 4.0m). Why approximate? Well, because there is a natural variation in the rate of change of refraction from patient to patient when moving from distance to reading.
In order to optimise (rather than just enhance) your patient’s vision within a specific “near zone”, it’s necessary to calculate in the testing room the exact amount of digression required (up to a maximum of 2.00D). This is how INCEPTION CUSTOM works, and it’s the better option for patients who are very clear on exactly what they require.
As with any occupational lens, the greatest advantage over full-range progressives will be achieved when catering for concise close range vision.
